Inspiration for Poets and Painters

Trees Of Huangshan

Huangshan (Yellow mountain) in Anhui province is something I can highly recommend. You have to climb up wat seem like thousands of steps. But the climb is so rewarding! On top op of this mountain you see what poets and painters were inspired by for centuries.

'Huangshan City'

The mountain is 50km (31 miles) northwest of Tunxi. The mountains are so beautiful and famous that the city of Tunxi is often better known as 'Huangshan City'. The diverse topography, includes bamboo forests, cascading waterfalls, clear lakes, hot springs, pine trees and quaint rock formations. It is often said that one only needs to visit Huangshan to get a taste of all the grand mountains in China.

Lianhua Feng

Huangshan is famous for its spectacular rocky peaks, oddly shaped pines, crystal-clear mountain springs and sea of clouds with the highest peak - Lotus Flower Peak (Lianhua Feng) at 1864m.

The 72 peaks range have been designated as a national park and declared a World Natural and Cultural Heritage area by UNESCO. The mountains cover an area of 154 sq km.

Even today, many Chinese want to conquer this mountain, so the mountain paths are often busy with hikers. For the less energetic, there are also 3 cable cars which transport you to the peaks in comfort.

Poem by Li Bay

Thousands of feet high towers the Yellow Mountain
With its thirty-two magnificent peaks,
Blooming like golden lotus flowers.
Amidst red crags and rock columns.
Once I was on its lofty summit,
Admiring Tianmu Pine below.
The place is still traceable where the immortal
Before ascending to heaven made elixir out of jade.
Now you embark on your journey there alone
Another Wen Boxue I happened to meet
Who've been to Five Mountains for the beauty of nature,
Leaving behind countless ranges of hills.
Homeward you go back to White Goose Ridge,
Back to drink from your Elixir Well.
If by chance I pay you a visit,
I expect to be met by your light carriage.
Eastwards from Lingyang you bend your steps,
And pick your way through fragrant bushes,
Many a stream and many a ford,
Peaks upon peaks shutting out the sky
That's where I'll call on you some other day
Across a bridge that spans cliffs like a rainbow.
