Surrounded by high mountains and rivers and located in the center of Longchuan Village in Jixi County, a county formerly affiliated to nowadays Huangshan City, the grand mansion is appraised to be the No. 1 family in ancient Huizhou. It is the former residence of General Hu Zongxian, Supreme Commander of the Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Fujian coastal defense against the Japanese pirates. Covering about 3,000 square meters, the mansion was built in the Ming Dynasty, more than 500 years up till now. As many as 12 generations have lived in this mansion, including Hu Binheng, grandfather of Hu Jintao, the Chinese President who is actually the grandson of the 14th generation of the big family (a conincidence or a necessity?). During its most prosperous years, 7 generations once lived under one roof.
Entering this grand house, you are entering a small town where you'll be amazed to see a medical pharmacy, an opera stage, family ancestral temple, Buddhist worship shrine, private school, official meeting hall, pavilion, and so on and so forth. This mansion, with white wall and grey tile surrounded by green mountains and waters, on the other hand, is the best-preserved and most magnificent architectural complex with the most complicated structure in the Ming Dynasty. It is the typical representative of the official family in ancient Huizhou.
