Cultural and Historical Tour of Huangshan
Description:

Huizhou in ancient times incorporated contemporary Huangshan City in Anhui Province and Wuyuan County in Jiangxi Province. Huizhou is famous in Chinese history as an enclave with its own language and culture, including the well-known Huizhou cuisine, distinctive forms of drama, carvings, architecture, medical science, paintings, etc. The Huizhou culture was well-known in a historical period running from the Southern Song Dynasty (1127 - 1279) to the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911) for its merchants, architecture, cuisine, seal cutting, opera, medicine, and a famous Confucian school of idealist philosophy of the Song (960 - 1279) and Ming (1368 - 1644) dynasties. Most significantly, the famous Beijing Opera was developed from the Huizhou Opera.

The tour, therefore, provides a unique chance for those interested in Huizhou history and culture.

Click to EnlargeAfter breakfast, we'll be driving for about one hour to reach Yixian County where Hongcun and Xidi are located. With a history of 800 years, the two villages were listed into the world heritage by UNESCO in 2000 for "The villages of Xidi and Hongcun are graphic illustrations of a type of human settlement created during a feudal period and based on a prosperous trading economy. In their buildings and their street patterns, the two villages of southern Anhui reflect the socio-economic structure of a long-lived settled period of Chinese history. The traditional non-urban settlements of China, which have to a very large extent disappeared during the past century, are exceptionally well preserved in the villages of Xidi and Hongcun." We'll explore in depth the typical architectural style of the local residential houses, including the beautiful wood carving, stone carving, brick carving and bamboo carving which are almost everywhere. What is more, we'll visit as many local houses as possible, getting a feeling of their interior rooms as well as their daily life. Stay in Huqinlou Guesthouse

Day 3 Hongcun - Huangshan Scenic Area (B, L, D)
Click to EnlargeHuangshan, which means "Yellow Mountain", is named after Huangdi, or the Yellow Emperor who is considered as the progenitor of the Chinese people. According to legend, he once lived on the mountain in search of enlightenment and immortality. After breakfast, we take a bus ride to Mt. Huangshan Scenic Area and take the Yuping Cable-car up the Mountain from the western side. A three-and-half-hour hike will take you to sightsee the fantastic and unforgettable views, including the Jade Screen Peak, Welcoming-guest Pine Tree, Lotus Peak, Turtle Peak, Heavenly Sea Pavilion, Bright Top Peak, Flying-over Rock, Cloud-dispelling Pavilion and Grand Canyon of the West Sea. Overnight up mountain.

Day 4 Huangshan - Shexian - Tunxi - Departure (B, L, D)
Click to EnlargeWatch the brilliant sunrise in the early morning. Sightsee the Lion Peak where the "Stone Monkey" is just perched on a peak. You will also do the Beginning-to-believe Peak and Fairy Maiden Peak before descending the Mountain by Yungu Cable-car on the eastern steps. Thereafter, we drive to visit Shexian County, one of the historic counties in China by the Central Government due to its brilliant cultural achievements as early as in the ancient times. There had been more than one thousand stone or wooden arches in Huizhou (nowadays Huangshan City) in history. Even now, there are still about 110 arches scattered across Huangshan territory. Monumental archway was built in the feudal society for the purpose of honoring meritorious service, imperial civil examination, benevolent administration as well as loyalty and filial piety. Today, we'll be heading for Tangyue after breakfast, a village famous for its archway complex in which 7 arches are still erecting in the order of loyalty, filial piety, chastity and righteousness. In addition, we'll visit the unique family ancestral temple for women in the past despite the overwhelmingly feudalist dominance throughout China's long history in which women were regarded inferior to men. Therefore, one can hardly find any temples for women across this country. Not far from the archways is the Bao's Family Garden, the largest private garden in East China. Thousands of bonsai are on display. For those fond of miniature landscape, this place is a must. We'll then visit another old village - Tangmo where we can see local farmers' daily life and their killing time along the "Water Street". Back to the downtown in the afternoon to visit the lovely Old Street. After dinner, you'll leave Huangshan.
